Does Everyone Gain Weight When They Quit Smoking?

by on October 26, 2007

There are a lot of reasons why people continue to smoke even though they know that the habit is bad for them.  Some of them claim that they enjoy smoking, when in actuality what they enjoy is the feeling of satisfying the craving.  Of course there is some psychological reasons why smoking would make you feel comfortable, but that still doesn’t outweigh the negative effects on your body.  Many people also continue to smoke because they feel that they might gain weight if they quit.  Does everyone gain weight when they quit smoking?

There is not really a physical reason why somebody would gain weight whenever they quit smoking.  While smoking cigarettes does alter your metabolism to a certain extent, it is not really the lack of smoking that causes weight gain in most ex-smokers.  Many people who are addicted to cigarettes use food in order to help them to get over the psychological addiction to the habit.  If you find that this is the case where you are concerned then you need to find another substitute for the cigarette whenever you give up smoking.

It is not necessary to gain weight whenever you quit smoking.  Some people have, in fact, lost weight when they kicked the habit.  This is not recommended, however, because it takes enough willpower just to be able to give up the habit in the first place.  So no, it is not necessary for everyone to gain weight when they quit smoking.  Just make sure that you get all of the help that is necessary to get over the psychological addiction quickly and you should be just fine.
